This is by far, the quickest and easiest way to remove pomegranate seeds.
- Score around the middle and pull apart to create two halves.
- Gently pull the sides out to loosen the seeds.
- Over a bowl, hold one half in your hand, cut side down, and smack the top with a wooden spoon. The seeds should just fall out into your hand.

I used to love pomegranates as a kid. My mums solution was to give us a pin and eat each one, felt like it took forever. I wish my mum knew about this, thank you for sharing.

So glad you’ll be able to enjoy them more quickly now! 🙂

Oh, and the other tip to SCORE around the middle and pull it apart rather than cutting through the middle is really handy too! Cause it did always bug me that I pay so much for a pomegranate then all the seeds in the middle get cut in half 🙂 No more!

I used to remove the seeds by submerging one half in a bowl of water and picking the seeds out that way – total pain in the butt! I saw the wooden spoon method on a kitchen hack email a few years back and I haven’t looked back! 🙂

THANK YOU. Why on earth did I never think of this? Or bother googling it? Pomegranates are pretty expensive here in Australia – there’s usually about a 2 week window of the year when they are good value and I go mad making pomegranate this and pomegranate that. But because I don’t cook with it often I never think of figuring out the most efficient way to get the seeds out and now I don’t have too! Do you need to make sure the pomegranate is super ripe?

Hi Nagi! Ripe pomegranate are easier to deseed. However, I have used ones that are perhaps a touch underripe, and this trick has still worked well. Leave those ones for stressful days when you may need to smack the pomegranate a bit harder 😉
